Why use SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties?

12/21/2018 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO Why use SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties? This sump pump backed up causing major water damage to this Edwardsburg, MI home

If you have a damp basement or live in an area prone to flooding, you know that dealing with water damage can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. If your home has a wet basement, you’re not alone. The American Society of Home Inspectors estimates that more than 60 percent of homes have issues with water in the basement.  A sump pump can be an effective option for preventing water damage.

Installed in a pit in the basement, these units sense when the water from rain or snow melt is rising in the pit and approaching the floor level. The incoming water is then pumped outside before it can damage the home or its furnishings.  Sump pumps are relatively low-maintenance devices, but you can help keep your unit operational by inspecting it regularly. Steps in a regular maintenance program can include:

  • Check the discharge line to make sure it is not stopped up or frozen. If necessary, unclog the air vent hole in the line.
  • Check the inlet screen to ensure that it’s not clogged with any residue or debris.
  • Making sure the float component is unobstructed and can move smoothly.
  • Scan the pit and remove any visible debris, mud, or stones.
  • Test the pump by slowly pouring a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise with the water level, triggering the unit to start pumping. If pumping doesn’t begin, check to see that the unit is plugged in. Your float switch or check valve may also be at fault.
  • Go outside to see that water is discharging and flowing where it’s supposed to go – well away from your home.

Winter Storm Preparedness in Cass County

6/20/2018 (Permalink)

Winter in Michigan can be pretty unpredictable.  Like the old saying goes:

“If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.”

The National Severe Storms Laboratory categorizes a winter storm as having snow, sleet, or freezing rain.  In Michigan, we can see any of this type of precipitation.  When the temperature is below and precipitation is in the forecast, that’s when our office knows what types of calls we’ll be getting: water damages.

How Water Pipes Freeze and Break

Water damage during a winter storm happens when your pipes freeze.  When water freezes, it expands and creates pressure inside the pipe, which can cause it to break.  The pipes that are most likely to freeze are those outside the home that are exposed.  Other vulnerable pipes are those indoors that don’t have access to heat, like those under your kitchen cabinets or in the garage.

Indoor Frozen Pipe Prevention

  • Before temperatures reach freezing, insulate exposed and vulnerable pipes. You can do this by installing pipe sleeves or even wrapping the pipes with newspaper.
  • Close the garage door to prevent cold air from coming in.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
  • Keep your home heated above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Call SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties at (269) 273-8777 for your water restoration needs!  We make water damage “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage Hazards in Edwardsburg, Michigan

6/20/2018 (Permalink)

Mixing water and electricity creates a potential for disaster, and since electrical hazards exists everywhere on the typical water damage job site, it is important to be aware of what to do. Water that comes into a home or building from either a roof leak or from water pipes in the attic is likely to intrude into the wiring system. Flooding can also pose a threat to your wiring system if the water reaches any ground level outlets.

The first thing to check is the power distribution box.  Turning off all circuit breakers at the power distribution panel is the easiest way to protect you, your SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties crew, and the building occupants from electrical shock hazards. If only a portion of the building was affected, then turn off all circuits that provide power to the damaged areas if water has intruded into wall cavities and electrical outlets. Use either a lockout device or tag out device when circuits are turned off to prevent any shock hazards.

If you’re facing a water emergency, call SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties at (269) 273-8777.  We make water damage “Like it never even happened.”

Damage to your Burr Oak, Michigan Business

5/4/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Damage to your Burr Oak, Michigan Business Let SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties get you back up and running!

When business owners visualize water damage, they often picture a massive storm wiping out power lines, flooding offices, and shutting down business for days at a time. It is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms, however, many entrepreneurs and business space renters forget that storms and severe weather aren't the only causes of floods and water damage. Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings:

  1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems

Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

  1. Damaged appliances and equipment

This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

  1. Broken pipes and plumbing

Similar to a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could be the result.

  1. Backed up sewer lines

This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated category 3 water, which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties will get you back up and running again! Call us today at (269) 273-8777.  We make water damage “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of Cass and St. Joseph Counties has been teaming up with the local Three Rivers Fire Department since 2011 to donate free smoke detectors and spread fire prevention awareness to the community.

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.  The National Fire Protection Association recommends that smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house.  Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance:

  • -Install smoke alarms on every level of the home including the basement.
    • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • -Test smoke alarms at least once a month using a test button.
  • -Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps" the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
  • -Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Mold- like any other hazardous material can potentially be dangerous if not handles properly.  A minor mold problem can quickly become a major infestation if left untreated.  Being aware of these signs of mold growth can significantly lessen the damage of the mold and reduce remediation cost:

  • Smell- Outdoor mold can smell stale, but indoor mold often smells musty and damp.
  • Past Flooding- Flooding that left materials, such as drywall, wet for more than 24 hours can cause mold growth.
  • Humidity- High humidity can lead to condensation and water accumulation.  Humidity levels above 45% can cause mold growth.
  • Water leaks- If a leak is undetected for a long time, it is very likely to cause mold growth.
  • Blocked gutters- Blocked gutters can be a sign of indoor moisture problems, because the water can seep into the walls or the foundation.
  • Poor ventilation- Ventilation helps to dry out moisture. A lack of ventilation allows moisture to remain much longer.
  • Dust- A dirty or dusty home is more likely to have mold.  Mold grows on dust.  Dust can also transport mold spores around the home.

  • Point of use surge protectors protect electronics plugged into the device from surges, must be replaced over time or after a major surge event
  • Power strips do not provide surge protection
  • No surge device can handle a direct lightning strike. Unplug sensitive electronics well before a storm to prevent damage

Preventing Ice Dams this Winter

1/17/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Preventing Ice Dams this Winter Prevention is key when protecting your home against water damage.

Don’t let ice dams cause water damage to your home. Ice dams are caused from the heat rising in the house and melting snow and ice on the roof. The melting snow and ice causes water runoff which freezes when it hits the cold edge of the roofline. The build up of ice on the edge of the room prevents water from draining properly. This trapped water can back up under shingles and find its way into your home, causing water damage.

Ice Dam Prevention Tips

  • Add insulation in your attic
  • Remove attic heat source
  • Insulate attic access doors
  • Check the exhausts
  • Check flashing around chimney
  • If possible get rid of snow on edge of your roof before it can turn to ice.

If ice dams did cause havoc on your home this winter… your local SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties can help mitigate and get your structure back to preloss condition.

Don't Let Mold Be a Worry

1/11/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Don't Let Mold Be a Worry Don't let this happen to your drywall!

Building a new home? Why not make it mold resistant! You can start by using mold resistant building products. For example, you can use drywall that’s made with fiberglass instead of paper facing. Other construction materials could include:

  • Paint treated with a registered fungicide to resist mold growth on painted surfaces
  • Wood treated with anti-mold chemicals
  • Using caulk and trim impervious to mold

There are other things to consider when trying to keep mold away from your new home.

  • Make sure to install gutters that take the water away from your home
  • Keep building materials dry during the building process
  • Equip the HVAC system with a filter or electronic air cleaner for catching airborne mold spores.

Although mold is almost everywhere and there is no way to completely inhibit its growth in your home, you can take preventative measures! For more tips on creating a more mold resistant home visit the mother nature network. If you do see signs of mold, let us help! SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

    • Remove excess moisture in the air by placing dehumidifiers in the basement.

Snow and Salt Damaging your Carpets?

1/2/2018 (Permalink)

The winter season can be harsh on your carpets. Snow, ice, and salt are constantly being brought into homes and businesses. Here are some tips to help prevent water and salt stains on your carpet.

  • Use two welcome mats. One to wipe your feet on outside, and one to wipe your feet on the inside.
  • Use long runners or winter rugs along any high traffic areas in your home or business.
  • Keep up with snow removal around your sidewalks and porches. The less snow outside your home or business, the less snow that can be brought in.
  • Vacuum frequently, especially in high traffic areas.
  • Have a spot removal program in place. Whether it's weekly or monthly, deep cleaning and removing stains will lengthen the life of your carpets.

Water Damage Sewage backups may not be covered by your insurance in Dowagiac, Michigan. This sewage backup occurred in this customer's Dowagiac, Michigan bathroom after heavy rains fell.

Sewer or sewage backup insurance may be necessary to cover damages that occurred where no surface water flooding also occurred. Sewer backup insurance, coverage for damages caused by backup through sewer and drains, is available on most homeowners and commercial policies, usually as an additional rider.  These backups not only cause damage that is difficult and expensive to repair, but also create health hazards. Most homeowner and business insurance policies do not cover sewer or sewage backup unless specific sewer or sewage backup coverage is added to the policy, according to the Insurance Information Institute.  On average a sewer or sewage backup cleanup claim process can cost anywhere from $2,000.00 to $20,000.00.  SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties highly recommends discussing any and all insurance coverage questions with your insurance agent or insurance company.

Don't Attempt to Suck up Water with your Household Vacuum

8/15/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Don't Attempt to Suck up Water with your Household Vacuum Don't ruin your vacuum! Let us do the dirty work for you.

If you have standing water, don’t attempt to vacuum it up with your household vacuum. Regular vacuum cleaners weren’t intended to pick up water. Trying to suck up the water can cause damage to your machine. If you don’t own a wet/dry vacuum cleaner and you have standing water in your home or business, don’t worry!

Certified Equipment

SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties uses extractors to remove excess water from floors following a flood, storm, or even a busted pipe. Our extractors are mounted to the truck or portable to allow better access inside structures. When the water is extracted quickly, the area can usually be dried much quicker.

Effective and Efficient Drying

Not only do we extract the water but we ensure everything has been dried thoroughly. We have drying down to a science... literally. The properties of temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, and dew point are measured to evaluate air conditions which help our technicians create the proper atmosphere for more efficient drying.

7/6/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Preventing Water Damage in your White Pigeon Home If you do find water damage in your White Pigeon home, no worries! SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties are water damage restoration specialists.

Preventing Water Damage Tips:

  • Repair peeling paint around doors and windows. Peeling paint can be a sign of water seeping into the wood.
  • Check for roof leaks around chimneys, plumbing vents, and attic vents. Trace the source of a ceiling leak by measuring its position from the nearest outside wall and then locate this point in the attic using a measuring tape.
  • Make sure your air conditioner’s drain pan drains easily, is adequately sloped toward the outlets, and that there is no standing water. Drain pans typically overflow the first time the unit is turned on.
  • Keep an eye on your water bill. A jump in your water bill could mean you have a leak somewhere.

Has Your Sturgis Business Had Their Carpets Cleaned Yet?

6/22/2017 (Permalink)

Commercial Has Your Sturgis Business Had Their Carpets Cleaned Yet? Leave it to SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties to get your carpets looking as good as new!

It is a good rule-of-thumb to have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once or twice a year. How often you get them cleaned is going to depend on the color, traffic, and soil build-up of your carpets. Carpets are known to trap dust, dirt, gasses, pet hair, and other soils. We recommend that don’t wait till your carpet looks really dirty before cleaning. Since the dirt builds up in layers, you don’t want the dirt hiding below the surface to become lodged and damage your carpet. SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties offers multiple cleaning options that fit your upholstery or carpet in your business. Some of our specialized cleaning methods include:

  • Bonnet Cleaning: A less aggressive method for short piled carpets.

  • Hot Water Extraction: A deeper cleaning method for all carpet types.

  • Deluxe Precondition and Rinse: Helps restore deeply soiled areas.

  • Showcase Premier Cleaning: The most thorough cleaning method in the industry.

  • Dry Cleaning: When color-fastness is an issue.

Storm Damage Preparing for Tornado Weather in Niles, MI If you experience storm damage to your home or business, don't worry! SERVPRO can assist with all of your storm damage needs in Niles.

Tornado Watch Verse Tornado Warning

It’s important to know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. A tornado watch is issued to alert people that there is a possibility of tornado development in your area. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar.

Tornado Planning

You should always have an emergency disaster kit handy in case of any tornadoes or storm damage. This kit can include:

  • Flashlight with extra batteries

  • First aid kit

  • Bottled water

  • Extra clothing

  • Canned or nonperishable food

  • Battery operated radio

You can also prepare for tornadoes by having an emergency plan. This plan is put in place in case you and your family are not together during the storm. The plan would include a safe location you and your family can meet at after the storm passes.

Is There Mold Hiding in your Cassopolis, MI Home?

5/11/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Is There Mold Hiding in your Cassopolis, MI Home? Mold was found after removing the cupboards off the wall. Remember a strong, musty odor may indicate hidden mold in your Cassopolis home.

When there is water there’s a way… meaning when you add just a little bit of moisture mold spores can form and grow.  Here are a few tricky places people don’t typically think of when checking for mold.

  • Chimneys have the ability to grow mold because the crevices of the brick collect water and other dirt particles.

  • Refrigerator drip pans are constantly collecting moisture and food spills from the refrigerator making it a great environment for mold growth.

  • Front loading washing machines are a susceptible place for mold growth because the door usually gets wet quite often. The door never gets a chance to dry out because it usually gets closed when not in use creating a great moist environment for mold to grow.

  • Air conditioners that sit for a while without being used have a good chance of mold growth. Air conditioners tend to draw in dust particles from the outside. The dust particles mixed with the condensation makes a perfect environment for mold spores to start.

If you find mold in any of these places, don’t worry, we are here to help! SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties has the training, equipment, and expertise to handle your mold problem.

Earth Day is a great reminder to reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as possible.

Air Moving Equipment

  • Air movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance the evaporation at the surface level, which reduces the drying time.

Dehumidification Equipment

  • Refrigerant dehumidifiers works similarly to air conditioners.
  • Desiccant Dehumidifiers use desiccants (chemicals) that readily absorb moisture from the air.

Deodorization Equipment

  • Ultra Low Volume Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that easily penetrates sites where odor-causing residues accumulate.
  • Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products in large volume, dense fogs suitable for confined areas. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that pair with and neutralize odor-causing particles.

Eliminate heating hazards this winter in Cass & St. Joseph Counties

1/17/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Eliminate heating hazards this winter in Cass & St. Joseph Counties 50% of all residential heating-related fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February.

No matter where you live, winter brings changes in the weather. In an effort to keep our homes and workplaces cozy, many people use alternative heat sources like portable space heaters, fireplaces, and wood burning stoves. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is responsible for an estimated $893 million in property damage annually. Heating is the second leading cause of residential fire deaths, making it important to review ways to help reduce the risk of heating-related fire.

  • Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Always use the right kind of fuel specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly.

If your property does suffer fire damage, contact SERVPRO of Cass & St. Joseph Counties at (269-273-8777) to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Does Your Cass & St. Joseph County Home Have A Mold Problem?

1/17/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Does Your Cass & St. Joseph County Home Have A Mold Problem? In Cass & St. Joseph Counties, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
